Suppression of Free Expression and Assembly in Singapore
Singapore’s political environment is overwhelmingly repressive. Citizens face severe restrictions on free expression, association, and peaceful assembly through overly broad criminal laws and regulations. The government has aggressively enforced a sweeping “online falsehoods” law that permits government ministers to order the “correction” or removal of online content. The rights of LGBT people are severely curtailed, although sexual relations between men were decriminalized in 2022. There are no legal protections against discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity.
